The One Skill Every Great Business Owner Should Master: Winning

Paul Claessen · 19 November 2025 · 3 min read

Winning matters. It’s what separates people who get what they want from those who don’t.

You can do everything right for months and still feel like nothing’s moving. Every week blurs into the next. That’s the loop of losing.

Knowing how to win is a vital skill.

Winning changes how you do everything. It compounds. Each result builds confidence. Each step forward makes the next one easier.

I’ve seen it in every business owner I’ve worked with. Once you start winning, standards improve, focus tightens, and decisions get better. Because, it’s a system.

Winning builds belief. You get a result, your brain rewards it, and suddenly the work feels different. You expect progress and push harder because you know it pays off.

That’s why I call winning a meta skill. It sits underneath everything else you do. When you know how to win, you bring a different standard to every goal, project, and decision.

Let’s dig into how we can systemise winning.

That’s the formula. It breaks almost every piece of common performance advice.

Winners build repeatable systems: higher standards, sustained drive, and calm control when it counts. Once you understand those three levers, winning becomes predictable.

Performance shifts from a feeling to a system.

Winning starts with standards. I had to learn this the hard way.

Standards rise from deep commitment.

Winners hold themselves to a different level. They don’t chase easy wins; they chase better ones. Every result becomes the new baseline.

You start noticing where you’ve been accepting average and you stop. It’s a never-ending pursuit of being world-class in how you think, operate, and deliver, because it’s who you are.

R.I.S.E. means you:

Winners set standards, and then lift them again.

And the moment you do, everything else starts to rise with it. But bear in mind that sometimes standards will slip. What matters is how quickly you reset.

What continues to drive heightened standards when the excitement wears off? That’s where G.R.I.N.D. comes in.

Drive is what turns standards into results. Drive is the refusal to back off when things become difficult. It’s the consistency that compounds. The work that makes the difference.

Every winner I’ve met says the same thing: “The grind never gets easier, you just get sharper.”

G.R.I.N.D. means you:

Drive is the quiet, daily pressure you apply to yourself long after the excitement’s gone. And when you keep showing up after motivation fades, you separate yourself from almost everyone else.

The final piece is control.

Emotion is either the multiplier or the drag, and it either fuels execution or derails it.

Winners stay composed. They don’t get rattled by problems, people, or pressure. You can feel it when they walk into a room.

They’re steady, certain, and unflustered. They know emotion clouds logic, and logic wins the day.

C.A.L.M. means you:

Emotional control is what separates professionals from amateurs. It’s what allows you to win again tomorrow, no matter what happens today.

You stop reacting.

Your standards rise.

Your effort becomes deliberate.

And you stop being thrown by emotion.

Competition becomes certain. You trust your process and you build real confidence.

Winning becomes predictable. And once you’ve felt that level of control, it’s almost impossible to go back.

Winning is a method.

Everyone has the same hours in the week, the same distractions, and the same noise. What separates the best isn’t luck or resources. It’s how you show up, set standards, and stay in control under pressure.

I’ve watched it happen hundreds of times.

The moment someone lifts one standard, everything else starts to move.

Try this: pick one part of your week where you’ve been tolerating average.

Tighten it. Raise the standard. Hold the line. You’ll see how fast things shift when you do. That’s how winning starts.

One deliberate decision at a time.

And it starts with learning how to win.
