If You’re Struggling With Goal Setting, Try This

Paul Claessen · 7 August 2025 · 3 min read

Most SME owners I meet are brilliant at what they do. But ask them about their personal goals, and the answers are often vague.

“I should exercise more.”

“I want to spend more time with the kids.”

“I need to get on top of the finances.”

Personal goals are usually the first thing to get bumped when business gets busy. It makes sense in the moment. Clients are waiting. The team needs you. Cash flow matters. But when this happens week after week, month after month, the result is always the same. You end up tired, resentful, and chasing deadlines while running on fumes. The business doesn’t get the best of you. It gets what’s left of you.

When that gap between effort and fulfilment gets too wide, people often try to fill it with something else. That might look like drinking more than usual, zoning out in front of a screen, or slipping into habits that numb rather than restore. It doesn’t start out that way, but it creeps in when there’s no better plan.

That’s not a personal failing. It’s a sign you need a system. When you lead yourself well, the business gets stronger too. You get clearer. More consistent. More in control. You run the business instead of the business running away from you.

What follows is a way to approach goal setting that actually works when life is busy. It’s simple. It’s structured. And it holds up under pressure.

There’s a reason most people struggle to juggle personal goals. It’s not that they don’t care. It’s that they treat goals like a list, instead of a sequence.

The Five Fs are more than categories. They are a structure for a well-run life. Each layer supports the next.

To get started, score each F from 1 to 10. Set a goal for the lowest one. That becomes your next focus. You can have up to five goals at once. One for each F. That is enough. More than enough.

This is not about perfection. It is about building the right foundations in the right order.

The most sustainable goals are not about what you want to get. They are about who you are becoming.

Instead of “Lose five kilos,” try “I’m someone who trains before work and eats with intent.”

Identity-based goals shift the thinking. You stop asking “Do I feel like it?” and start asking “Is this what someone like me does?”

You care about your goals. If the follow-through is patchy, it is usually the system that needs a reset.

Systems remove drag. They reduce the need for willpower. They make it easier to keep going.

Every goal gets achieved through consistent action. And every consistent action is powered by a habit.

Habits are how goals get done, not in one big burst, but in dozens of small, repeated moves that compound over time.

The habit loop keeps your identity alive, your excuses low, and your goals in motion.

Start Small, Move Fast

Big goals can inspire, but small starts unlock action. Most people delay because the starting line feels too far away.

Shrink it.

One set of squats

One sentence in a journal

One line in a book

One message to a mate

One tap of the savings app

Movement creates momentum. Start, then keep going.

You need goals that matter. That is Desire. The Five Fs give you the structure for that. One goal per F. No more.

You need goals that are clear. That is Precision. Framing them around identity makes the actions obvious.

You need goals that feel achievable. That is Excuse reduced. Systems and habits take the friction away.

Goal Setting = Desire × Precision ÷ Excuse

That is the full equation. Simple. Proven. Yours.

So score your Five Fs. Choose up to five goals. Write each one as an identity. Build a simple system. Shrink the starting line. Take the next step.

Lead yourself with clarity and intent. Life gets easier. Business gets better.
